t is not only in demand during the current corona crisis - also during the flu wave or during the norovirus. The home remedies for viruses and bacteria should never run out in the household, because you never know what can come. But what if it's already there? What is the best way to arm yourself with a disinfectant?
Not everyone knows that:
Many home remedies can be used effectively against viruses and bacteria, some are even well tolerated by the skin and are ideal for disinfecting. Be it alcoholic high-proof, vinegar essences, bleach or hydrogen peroxide - much of what you already have at home can be used effectively against the corona (more precisely SARS-CoV-2, the COVID-19 virus) or the flu virus. There are many synthetically produced disinfectants on the market, but when there is a shortage, you have to use all available resources effectively and sometimes improvise.
Let's go through the best alternatives:
1. Undiluted vinegar essence
The home remedy par excellence - the vinegar essence. Above 25% acetic acid, it is fatal to almost all viruses and bacteria. It can also be used to remove mold. It is best to use the essence undiluted for surface disinfection. You can wipe the surfaces with a cloth and let them dry. This is how the viruses are effectively combated. It is important that busy areas, such as the door handle or the sink will not be forgotten. The whole thing has a shortcoming - it doesn't really smell pleasant. But let's face it, health comes first. However, please do not use the vinegar essence for disinfecting the skin, as the acid can attack the skin and rashes can form.
2. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)
It has been known as an effective antiseptic for some time and can be found in pharmacies in many places under normal circumstances. Most of the time it is the 3% solution. It has a disinfectant and antibacterial effect. Everything about the 3% solution is corrosive to human mucous membranes, so you should dilute everything above 3% hydrogen peroxide with distilled water. When used as an antiseptic, the 3% solution should also be diluted. The rule here is one part hydrogen peroxide, two parts distilled water. The solution can then be sprayed onto the palm of the hand. The disinfection solution dries by itself and destroys almost all known viruses or bacteria.

3. High-proof alcohol - anything over 60% works
Most disinfectant solutions contain either ethanol or the widely used isopropanol. Both have very effective antiviral properties. If you have rum straw 80 or barbecue spirit with more than 70 percent alcohol at home, you can use both directly for disinfection of surfaces or for the skin.
To prevent the skin from drying out, it is advisable to add about 15 ml of glycerin as in the WHO recipe
The recently published WHO recipe
contains both ingredients. As these are easily accessible substances per se, but are still highly effective against viruses and bacteria, the WHO decided to include these ingredients in your recipe.
I wish you success!
